Sespe Creek, Ojai California-May 2014

Long overdue to begin training for our upcoming trip to Iceland, Thu and I decided to drive up to Ojai and try out a new trail we had discovered. Having just bought new hiking boots, I was a little worried about breaking them in on the trail, but I guess they have to be broken in somewhere!

The trail followed the Sespe Creek, sometimes crossing over, and sometimes rising high above so that the river became a tiny ribbon off in the distance. The elevation gain and loss was never that great, and it made the hike a little less strenuous than we've become used to. My problem was that I overpacked my backpack, and had the new boots.

Dried up part of the riverbed.

The creek!

Amazing blue skies...it was hard to take a bad picture.

The closer we looked, the more we noticed how much wildlife existed right under our feet.

This is why springtime is such a great time to take a hike.

The trail meandered through so many different types of landscapes, and we never really got tired of the scenery. A meadow surprised us shortly after stopping to take pictures in the field of wildflowers. By this time, I was really feeling the new hiking shoes, and hoping camp would be coming up soon.

We read there were rarely any bear sightings...we found these within about 20 meters of camp.

After roughly 10-12 miles, we decided to make camp. The springs were another 2 miles or so, but it was hot out, and the thought of sitting in near boiling water just didn't seem like the right thing to do. There was another couple camping, and we found a spot near them to stay for the night, hoping that if the bears showed up we could outrun them.

Great view of the lake from our tent.
