This is an area where we haven’t really explored, so on our way to the trailhead for Tomales Point, we decided to stop and take a look at Kehoe Beach. The trail to the beach acted like a wind tunnel, whipping the tall grass around and blowing sand in our faces.

This is a very scenic beach, especially with clear, blue skies.

The Tomales Point Trail begins at Pierce Point Ranch.

The views along the entire hike are coastal and beautiful. You get a great sense of how powerful the ocean is from up on the cliffs.

We came across this herd of elk somewhere in the middle of the hike. It’s always a little intimidating when you see large animals staring you down while you’re entering their territory. They were clearly docile, given that they were allowing a bunch of other hikers to take close up pictures. We tend to be a little more cautious, one charge with those antlers and you’re day of hiking is pretty much over.

Ending the hike back at the ranch. 9.4 miles, tired, but happy.

On our way out we had to stop at McClures Beach.

Great views of the coast, this time from down at sea level.

The rocky coast of Northern California is always a fun break from the more sandy clear beaches of Southern California. It always feels so much more wild and untamed up here.

That night we stayed at Cavallo Point, one of the nicest and most unique hotels I’ve ever been to. It’s a converted military barracks, and each unit is like a private little house at the north base of the Golden Gate Bridge.

This has to be one of the best views of the bridge you can find.
