After a 40+ mile drive over bumpy, sandy, rocky dirt roads we arrived at the trailhead to Coyote Gulch.
We decided to let Nini and Johnny tag along for this one. Claustrophobia wouldn't be a problem for them, but we didn't ask about fear of heights.
A long stretch of sandy trail separated us from the edge of the gulch. Luckily temperatures were pretty moderate.
After about two miles we reached the edge. There are only a couple ways into the canyon, we missed by a little bit so we had to turn west and find the crack.
We were entering through what they call the "Crack In The Wall". The crack is too narrow with a pack on, so we had to lower our packs section by section.
Easier to get through for the smaller people in our group.
Fighting off the claustrophobia. Luckily there was plenty of sky and I made it through without any problems.
Once we reached the bottom of the canyon we were treated to some spectacular views. You can see Steven's Arch in the background.
Crow or raven? I still have a hard time telling the difference. I think this one is a raven because of it's call.
Beautiful fall colors.
Perfectly blue skies...a good thing when you're in a canyon. Rain can be a disaster.
After a little bit of hiking we had to put on our water shoes and head up-river. It was cold, but there was still enough sun to keep the temperature balanced.
The sun behind the trees created a warming glow. Fall is definitely the best time to do this hike.
We found a great spot for camp that night, protected under an alcove which would hopefully keep us warm for the night. This is a shot as the sun went down...
...and this is a shot of the moonlight.
